Cette recherche explore les effets des biais de catégorisation dans la
représentation d'une minorité ethnique en l'occurrence la communauté
maghrébine en France. Des étudiants de première année de psychologie
(N=100) ont produit des associations de mots en réponse aux mots
stimulus Maghrébins versus Français.
L'analyse comparative des listes de mots associés permet de retrouver les
distorsions cognitives classiquement repérées dans le champ de la
catégorisation sociale et de les approfondir.
Ainsi le biais de contraste se révèle autocentré, l'assimilation est fondée
sur le stéréotype, et la discrimination se manifeste par une privation de
qualité et non une attribution de défauts.
Abstract: This research investigates the effects of categorization bias in
the representation of an ethnic minority, in this instance the North African
community in France. Students in their first year of psychology (N=100)
produced word associations in response to North African versus French
word stimulus.
A comparative study of the lists of associated words makes it possible to
find cognitive distortions that are usually identified within the field of social
categorization, and gain a deeper understanding of them.
The contrast bias thus proves to be egocentric, assimilation is based on
stereotypes, and discrimination reveals itself through a denial of quality and
not through the allocation of defects.
